 General Description

The 3rd rate is a 3rd rate ship of the line (if you didn't figure that out through the name), the third rate in the game is based on the Bellona and apart from paint job she looks and performs the same. The 3rd rate has 2 gun decks and can also mount cannons on her weather deck.

Armament

The third rate can mount 24pd cannons on her lower gun deck, 18pd cannons on her top gun deck, and 9pd cannons or 32pd carronade on her weather deck. For her bow chasers she can either mount 9pd cannons or 68pd carronades and for her stern chasers she can mount 68pd carronades or 9 pd cannons.

Characteristics

The 3rd rate is not a fast ship, the Pavel is faster, however she is more maneuverable than a Pavel and does not require as much crew. Compared to a Constitution she is slower and not as maneuverable but has a lot more guns.

Here is the Sailing Profile for the 3rd Rate, she is predictably a difficult ship to sail. While she displays the same preference for a broad reach as the other square-rigged vessels, she also displays notably weaker speeds when running before the wind than might be expected. Furthermore, her loss of speed when putting the helm towards the wind is rapid and can often be disastrous in engagements. On a positive note, she performs decently well relatively on a beam reach. In short, do not expect to perform any advanced maneuvers in the 3rd Rate as her low speed, bad turning rate, and poor sailing profile combine to make for a very challenging command for any Captain.
