The privateer is an up-gunned Lynx which gets 4 extra guns, able to carry larger carronades and 15 extra crew, however thats not the only changes there are also some changes to its handling characteristics.
The Privateer's modest firepower is sufficient to capture smaller trade ships, while her excellent upwind characteristics allow her to disengage from square-rigged pursuers. The result is an ideal ship for harassing enemy shipping in their home waters. Her captain must avoid being caught near the coast with the wind coming from land, however.

The Privateer is an upgraded Lynx which makes her sail a lot like the Lynx however unlike the lynx she gets speed bonus and boarding bonuses which makes her more useful in well... privateering. She is the fastest of all ships sailing upwind, and so is an excellent ship for ambushing unsuspecting shipping and denying them escape.
Here is the Sailing Profile for the Privateer. As mentioned above, she is fastest sailing close-hauled (at point 45). She is still a decent sailer as you move from point 45 to point 90, but loses speed the further you get from her strongest point. After point 90, continued turning towards sailing with the wind directly in her back lowers her speed furthermore. Essentially, the Privateer is the strongest ship for sailing upwind, but one of the weaker when sailing downwind.
